Duties and Accomplishments Principal Investigator on multiple grants from NIH, NINDS, The Epilepsy Foundation, and American Society of Sleep Medicine. Human and animal research on the neurophysiology and neurochemistry of epilepsy, sleep, and the limbic system. He established the human microdialysis study program at UCLA Medical School in 1990, and continued human microdialysis research until 2015. His clinical duties included operating room targeting of depth electrode placements and operating room assisting in cortical grids placement in epilepsy patients from 1978 until 2010, as well as depth electrode stimulation and cortical grid functional mapping in epilepsy patients until 2006. Graduate teaching in Neuroscience, Neurobiology, Neuroengineering, Biomedical Engineering, UCLA Medical and Dental School Neuroanatomy and Neurobiology. Supervision and mentoring of graduate and postdoctoral students in Neurology and Neurobiology and Fellows in Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology. Research Over 200 scientific journal publications, book chapters, reviews, and abstracts, over 30 invited talks at national and international scientific meetings, NIH study section reviewer for NINDS and NIBIB (2007) and reviewer for over 20 scientific journals between 1979 and 2015. Multiple publications on electrical stimulation of the human brain during clinical evaluation of patients with epilepsy, both for depth electrode and cortical grid functional mapping. Current membership in of the Society for Neuroscience and American Epilepsy Society, past member of the American Society of Sleep Medicine and American Clinical Neurophysiology Society. Committee service in UCLA Department of Neurology, UCLA Animal Research Committee, and American Epilepsy Society. Teaching Undergraduate Student Research Program, Neuroscience 199, 199Honors Graduate: PhD thesis advisor in Neurobiology, teaching classes in Neuroscience 275, Neurobiology M200A, Neuroengineering 212 and Biomedical Engineering M260. Medical School: Neuroanatomy M203, Dental School: Neurobiology 106, UCLA Department of Neurology Clinical Neurophysiology Lecture Series: “Cortical Grid and Depth Electrode Recording and Stimulation for Functional Brain Mapping” and “In Vivo Microdialysis Studies of Neurotransmitter Release in the Human Brain”.
